Dr. Sasivimon Swangpol, known as Ajan Pu-Pe, is a Thai botanist and Assistant Professor at Mahidol University. Her long-standing commitment to botanical art and science education was shaped by her postgraduate studies in the United States, where she took a biological illustration course under the tutelage of the late renowned botanical illustrator, Marion R. Sheehan, while completing her Master of Science in Horticulture at the University of Florida. This formative experience inspired her to establish Thailand’s first university-level Scientific Illustration course in 1999, alongside an annual public workshop. Now in its 26th year, the programme continues to foster scientific literacy and creative expression across diverse audiences.
Ajan Pu-Pe is the founding president of the Sci-Art Network, through which she has led more than 50 workshops, exhibitions, and co\llaborative activities with botanical gardens, museums, and international illustration societies. Under her guidance, the Network has hosted a series of exhibitions, including Botanical Art Thailand (2019–2024) and Botanical Art Worldwide Thailand in 2018 and 2025. These efforts aim to nurture emerging talent and promote dialogue at the intersection of science, art, and cultural heritage.
Since 2018, she has also served as Vice President and Academic Chair of the Botanical Society of Thailand, under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen.
My journey with watercolor began in childhood, where painting served as a refuge and a means of quiet reflection. In 2021, I turned my focus toward botanical art, captivated by its balance of scientific precision and artistic expression. Since then, I have participated in many exhibitions my work, sought further training, and engaged in a continual process of refining both technique and personal perspective.
For the past four years, my practice has been a search for authenticity an exploration of how observation, discipline, and imagination can converge on paper. Each painting is both a study and a meditation, an attempt to capture the living essence of plants while honoring their form and subtle beauty. I remain committed to developing this practice, allowing my work to evolve alongside my deepening understanding of the natural world.
